What is direct regulation?
Direct settlement means that we, as a veterinary clinic, have direct contact with your insurance company during or shortly after a medical visit. Instead of you having to pay the entire amount out of your own pocket and sending in receipts afterwards, the insurance company calculates your compensation directly and you only pay us the cost that your insurance company does not cover. When settling directly through us, a handling fee of SEK 300 is added.
Direct regulation for dogs
When your dog suddenly becomes ill, for example suffers from a wound or needs to undergo a lengthy medical examination, direct payment is an incredibly convenient way to avoid having to pay large amounts for examinations and tests.
Direct regulation for cat
For cats being investigated for chronic and hidden diseases, where many tests are required, direct regulation gives you the security of knowing immediately what the insurance covers before the investigation proceeds.
Direct regulation for horses
We can also send the documentation directly when visiting stables for sick or injured horses. This is especially useful in emergency situations, such as a wound that needs to be stitched up quickly in the stall.
This is how direct regulation works no matter where we meet
Because we offer our services through visits to the stable and home, at our veterinary clinics (in selected Arken Zoo stores) and at our animal clinic in Östermalm, we not only adapt the care - we also adapt the administration. Direct regulation works just as smoothly everywhere.
Home visits & in the stables
When an animal is sick, a home visit is a huge relief. After we have examined your animal at home or in the stable, we sit down and compile the medical record and costs on our tablet. We submit the direct payment digitally from your kitchen table or tack room. When the insurance company has got back to us, you will receive a secure payment link via text message or email.
Veterinary clinic
If you visit one of our clinics (in Stockholm, Gothenburg or Uppsala) for, for example, a quick check of a runny eye or a small wound, we can easily handle the direct regulation from the examination room. You will usually receive a quick response and can then purchase any special diet in the shop next door.
Animal clinic
Our clinic in Östermalm is the hub for major investigations (such as ultrasounds and surgeries). Here, direct payment becomes extra important, as the costs of extensive surgery or advanced diagnostics quickly add up. We ensure that we maintain an ongoing dialogue with your insurance company throughout the investigation to ensure that you feel financially secure.
What can VetAtHome do for you during a direct home inspection?
When an animal gets sick, the situation is often stressful for both of you. Receiving care at home creates peace and quiet for the animal, while avoiding the need to transport a worried dog or cat to a waiting room. By offering direct settlement on site, you avoid having to spend money and hassle with paperwork at a difficult time. If you prefer, direct settlement works just as smoothly at our clinic in Östermalm or our clinics at Arken Zoo (Kungens Kurva, Odenplan, Orminge, Askim, Boländerna).
Identify
During the visit, we carefully document all symptoms in a medical record and make a diagnosis. This detailed medical record is the very basis for the insurance company to approve the direct settlement.
Treat
We provide the right treatment, take samples or give medication on site, and include these costs in the documentation for the insurance company. If surgery is needed, we write a referral to an animal hospital (which of course costs nothing<9.
Prevent
Insurance rarely covers preventive care, but during a medical visit we always provide safe and solid advice on how you can best avoid the current health problem from recurring in the future.
How to go about direct regulation step by step
1. Preparations
Please provide your insurance company and insurance number when booking or have it ready when visiting the clinic or when the vet arrives.
2. Investigation
We examine your animal methodically at the clinic/clinic or in the quiet environment of your home and take a detailed medical record.
3. Contact with the company
When the examination is complete, we send the medical record and cost documentation digitally to your insurance company. The settlement cost at VetAtHome is 300 SEK regardless of whether your visit was via home visit, at one of our clinics or at the Östermalm clinic.
4. Message
Your insurance company reviews the medical record and calculates your exact compensation based on your specific insurance terms.
5. Payment
You then only pay your own deductible and any deductions directly to us via Swish or card. At the Östermalm clinic, payment by card can be made through a card terminal, for home visits or at our clinics, a safe and secure payment link will be sent to you via text message or e-mail. Via this link you can also choose to pay via Klarna. Unfortunately, we do not currently take Amex.

When does direct regulation not work?
We always do our absolute best to help with direct settlement regardless of where we meet, but in some cases it is unfortunately not technically possible or the company may refuse compensation.
Examples of when direct regulation can be made more difficult
- The insurance company's claims department is closed (often the case during late evenings and weekends).
- The visit concerns a disease that is specifically excluded in your terms and conditions (e.g. a known breed-specific reservation).
- The visit is preventive (e.g. a basic vaccination or a puppy check-up), which is never covered by insurance.
- Your insurance is newly taken out and has a waiting period (often 20 days) that has not yet expired.
- The majority of insurance companies do not cover dental cleanings. Please check your insurance terms and conditions before your pet undergoes dental surgery to find out what applies to your pet's insurance.
Insurance in connection with dog illness
Insurance is available when your dog suffers from illness or an accident. It often starts with a sudden change, such as the dog becoming extremely lethargic, refusing to eat or suddenly limping heavily on a walk.
How is it noticeable?
You notice clear medical symptoms such as itching, vomiting, diarrhea, blood in the urine or a growing lump. If the dog is demonstrably sick, the insurance will cover the examination.
Early signs
If you act on early signs (such as your dog drinking abnormally), we can quickly make a diagnosis. Waiting can worsen the condition and make the investigation unnecessarily expensive.
When it gets worse
If you seek care too late and the dog has already become life-threateningly ill, the insurance will of course still apply, but unfortunately you may quickly hit the ceiling for your maximum compensation during the current insurance year.
Cat insurance terms – important differences
Just like for dogs, cat insurance covers the investigation of illness, such as kidney problems or urinary retention. However, cats are true masters at hiding suffering and once they show symptoms (such as withdrawing, stopping washing themselves or urinating outside the litter box) the illness has often been going on for a long time. It is important to know your insurance conditions for your cat. Many companies have specific age limits where the life amount is reduced or special rules regarding dental disease FORL (TR). This dental disease is a very common and painful dental disease in cats, which is unfortunately often completely excluded from compensation.
When should I contact a veterinarian and when does insurance cover emergencies?
If your animal seems limp, has a wound that is not healing or if you find a lump, you should definitely book a home visit or come to our clinics. The insurance covers the examination because there is a medical basis for the visit. The red flags that require immediate emergency medical care at a 24-hour animal hospital are if the animal collapses, has seizures, is in respiratory distress or is hit. In the case of non-emergency events in the evenings or on weekends, direct settlement may sometimes be closed with the companies and you may then have to pay immediately and then send in the receipt afterwards. The animal's survival and quality of life should always come first.
The role of the medical record in direct settlement – how does the insurance company assess it?
The medical record is the document the insurance company uses to assess your compensation.
- Clinical examination and diagnosis: We establish a diagnosis that shows the company that the treatment is medically justified.
- Medical history and motivation: We document symptoms and history to substantiate the need for tests and measures.
- Assessment of insurance conditions: The company reviews the medical record against your terms and conditions to see what is covered by the coverage.
- Documentation upon referral: For further care at the Östermalm clinic, our medical record continues to serve as the basis for the company's approval.
Compensation for treatment and medicine for dogs, cats and horses
When we pay directly, we send in the full cost of the examination, the samples we have taken and the treatments we have given on site (for example, painkiller injections or wound washing). If your dog, cat or horse subsequently needs prescription medication to continue taking, we write an e-prescription. You always pay for medication that you pick up yourself at a regular pharmacy there, and you can then upload the receipt for the medication separately to your insurance company if medication is included in your terms and conditions.
The time afterwards – the fixed deductible
If you have recently had a direct claim, you have probably already paid your fixed deductible. Most companies have a deductible period of 125 to 365 days. If your animal gets sick again within this period, you will only pay the variable percentage at the next direct claim, making return visits or new treatments significantly cheaper.
Direct control and treatment of cats at home
Since many cats are extremely sensitive to stress, it is an incredible relief that we can both examine, treat and administer the direct regulation completely in the peace and quiet of your couch. If the cat is diagnosed with a chronic illness and needs a special diet (veterinary food) that we prescribe, it is important to know, however, that insurance companies very rarely reimburse the cost of food, but only the cost of the medical examination and any prescription medications.
Forecast, security and expectations in direct regulation
The goal of direct settlement is to give you as a pet owner financial security. By using the insurance smoothly on site, you don't have to worry about large outlays, which often means that the right treatment and investigation can be started much faster.
- Financial security – not having to spend money means that the right care can be provided immediately.
- Faster decisions – when the cost is clear, it becomes easier to approve important samples immediately.
- Less stress – we handle all contact and paperwork so you can focus on your animal.
The prognosis for dogs and cats
Small animals that are examined early usually have a very good prognosis. By using the insurance for early symptoms, you never have to forego important tests for financial reasons, which speeds up recovery significantly.
The prognosis for horse
For horse owners, direct regulation significantly reduces stress in the event of acute injuries or colic attacks in the stable, as there is security in the fact that the cost is shared directly with the insurance company on site.
Quality of life always comes first
Our primary goal is for your animal to be healthy. If a serious illness is diagnosed and the insurance company announces that your maximum compensation has been reached, or if the illness is excluded, we will have an empathetic and honest dialogue with you. Together we will find a plan forward that focuses entirely on what is most ethical and gives the animal the best possible quality of life, based on your circumstances.
Self-checking your insurance – how to prepare at home
Instead of frantically searching for paperwork when your pet gets sick, it's a good idea to check your insurance terms and conditions well in advance. Do this self-check:
- Save the number: Enter your exact insurance number as a quick note on your phone so you always have it at hand when we arrive.
- Check your deductible period: Is your period 125 days or 365 days? If you have recently been to the vet, you may have already paid your fixed deductible.
- Read the terms and conditions: Log in to your company and read through whether there are any specific exceptions (reservations) registered for your particular animal.
Prevention – when does insurance not cover?
It is important to understand that general pet insurance is intended for unforeseen accidents and illnesses. It never covers planned and preventive wellness care:
- Vaccinations: Annual vaccinations are never reimbursed, but are always fully paid for by you as the pet owner.
- Inspections: Health certificates and pre-sale inspections are prophylactic care that cannot be directly regulated.
- Castrations: Preventive castration (which is not done due to uterine or prostate disease) is generally not covered.
- Dental cleaning: Dental cleaning (PTR) is rarely covered by insurance companies. Read your insurance policy to see what applies to your particular animal.
Cost, insurance and compensation
When direct payment is approved, you only pay your fixed and variable deductible for the care that the insurance covers. For the actual work of carefully compiling medical records and maintaining contact with the insurance company, a small administrative direct payment fee is usually added. In the case of a medical visit, the trip is included in our regular price for the veterinary consultation if you live within 30 kilometers of us.

Which insurance companies can you settle directly with?
We collaborate and can smoothly settle directly with the majority of all Swedish insurance companies on the market, including Agria, Folksam, Svedea, Lassie, Moderna (Trygg-Hansa) and Hedvig.
Do I have to pay for my healthcare visit directly?
No, absolutely not. You can always choose to pay the entire veterinary cost to us on site via card or Swish, and then calmly send receipts and records to your company afterwards.
Can you regulate directly in the evenings and weekends?
We carry out safe visits in the evenings and weekends, but the possibility of direct settlement depends entirely on whether your specific insurance company's claims department is open and can accept the case at that time. However, it is usually possible to resolve the case even in the evenings and weekends.
What happens if the company refuses direct regulation on site?
If the company determines that the condition is not covered by your terms and conditions (e.g. due to a reservation), you must pay the full invoice at the time of the visit. You can sometimes request a review with the insurance company later.
Is it possible to get direct payment at your receptions at Arken Zoo?
Yes, we offer direct payment at all of our physical clinics. You can get help from us at Arken Zoo in Kungens Kurva, Odenplan, Orminge, Askim and Boländerna.
Does the insurance cover vaccinations or puppy inspections?
No, general insurance only covers accidents and illnesses. Preventive (prophylactic) care, such as annual vaccinations or check-ups, is not covered and therefore cannot be directly regulated.
Can you arrange care for my horse directly at the stable?
Yes, if we come out and examine or treat an injury or illness on your horse, we can of course send the documentation for assessment directly to your insurance company on site.
What does fixed and variable deductible actually mean?
The fixed deductible is a fixed amount (e.g. SEK 2,000) that you pay once during a certain period. The variable deductible is a percentage (often 15–25 %) of the excess healthcare cost that you always pay.
Can I pay for the medicine you give on site?
If we give injections or painkillers during the visit itself, the cost will be included on the invoice we send to the company. You always pay for medication you pick up yourself at a regular pharmacy there.
Do you charge a fee for the direct settlement service?
Yes, for the specific, administrative work of carefully compiling medical records and receipts and maintaining contact with the insurance company, a direct settlement fee of SEK 300 is charged at the visit.
