The Östermalm Animal Clinic's Neurology Clinic has specialist expertise and can help your animal with examination, investigation, diagnosis and treatment of neurological conditions.
At our neurology clinic, you will be met by our neurologist, who is a Swedish stage 2 specialist in neurology with over 15 years of experience in diseases of the nervous system in dogs and cats. We combine solid experience in neurology – the study of the brain, spinal cord and nerves – with modern diagnostic methods. This allows us to make precise diagnoses and initiate the right treatment at an early stage, which is often crucial for the prognosis.
Each visit begins with a thorough review of the animal's medical history, followed by a clinical examination focusing on neurological functions. We assess, among other things, cranial nerves, reflexes, gait and pain to be able to localize the problem and plan the correct further investigation or treatment.
A thorough neurological examination helps us evaluate everything from pain to motor and neurological abnormalities. By systematically assessing movement, reflexes, coordination and sensation, we can identify where the problem lies.
Systematic testing of spinal reflexes and cranial nerve function.
Review of the musculoskeletal system to identify pain or stiffness along the spine, neck and muscles.
Evaluation of the animal's ability to perceive body position and respond to stimuli.
Neurological disorders are often more complex than they first appear and can present with symptoms that are easily confused with other conditions, such as lameness, stiffness, or behavioral changes. Therefore, a neurological assessment is often crucial to making the correct diagnosis.
Pain from the spine can cause the animal to relieve pressure on a leg and appear lame, even though the cause is in the nervous system.
Pain from nerves can cause a diffuse stiffness or reluctance to move, which is easily confused with muscle or joint disease.
Seizures can sometimes be subtle and manifest as absences, restlessness, or repetitive movements rather than classic convulsions.
Because neurological conditions can vary in complexity – from simple investigations of pain or movement disorders to more advanced diagnostics – we always provide a clear cost estimate after the initial examination. You are also welcome to contact our support for a more specific price quote based on your animal’s symptoms.
Neurological problems can occur suddenly and be serious. Because some conditions can quickly worsen and, in the worst case, lead to permanent disability, it is important to contact your veterinarian immediately if symptoms appear.
Our veterinarians have a passion for neurology and extensive experience in investigating both congenital and acquired neurological diseases. We ensure that you receive a clear explanation of the diagnosis and a concrete plan for further investigation and treatment.
We know that neurological examinations can be unfamiliar or stressful for the animal. Therefore, we work at a calm pace and ensure that your animal has time to settle in and feel safe before we begin the examination.
Regardless of whether you have met with us at home or at the veterinary clinic, we have full control over your history when you visit our neurology clinic. Through a common medical record system, we create a common thread in care that saves time and increases safety for both you and your animal.
VetAtHome offers both clinic visits, home visits and visits to our veterinary practices – what is best depends on your animal's needs and what feels most convenient for you. We work with all insurance companies, making it easy to get help regardless of your insurance coverage.
