What does a veterinary examination and health check involve?
A veterinary examination is a systematic, clinical examination of your pet's health from nose to tail. It is performed either to investigate an ongoing illness, or as a routine and preventive measure (called a dog health check or cat health check) to ensure that the animal is well.
Examination of dog
A veterinary examination of a dog involves listening to the heart and lungs, feeling the joints, abdomen, lymph nodes and looking in the mouth. A thorough inspection of an adult dog (inspection when selling a dog) is often carried out before a relocation and results in a legally important inspection certificate.
Examination of cat
A veterinary examination of a cat is often about finding hidden age-related diseases in good time. Many pet owners book us annually to take blood tests on their senior cat to detect problems with the kidneys or thyroid gland early.
Healthcare guide: How to choose the right place for the examination
Because we offer our services through home visits, at our veterinary clinics (Arken Zoo) and at our animal clinic in Östermalm, we can adapt the examination completely to the animal's needs and your everyday life.
Home visit
A veterinary visit for a cat or dog at a large clinic involves transport cages, car trips, unfamiliar smells and stress. Especially for cats, a veterinary visit can be traumatic. By hiring a veterinarian to come to your home, the animal can stay in its own safe place. This not only makes the animal calmer, it also gives us veterinarians much more accurate values when we measure blood parameters, pulse and blood pressure on the couch. We are experts in veterinary home visits.
Veterinary clinic
Our clinics connected to Arken Zoo (in Stockholm, Gothenburg and Uppsala) are excellent for simple medical examinations (e.g. skin problems or ear infections), the annual senior check-up or for quickly obtaining an inspection certificate issued prior to sale.
Animal clinic
Our clinic in Östermalm is the obvious choice if we suspect over the phone that your dog or cat needs an X-ray for lameness, an ultrasound for internal organs, or if the animal requires surgery under safe anesthesia.
What can Vetathome do during a health check?
Whether you are contacting us because your animal is sick, or because you want to book a preventive health check, our goal is to give you clear answers and a safe plan forward.
Identify
We sit down and talk about the animal's appetite, routines, past illnesses and your current observations (anamnesis). We then systematically feel the animal's body; joints, abdomen, ears, eyes, teeth and listen to the heart.
Treat
Depending on what our veterinary examination shows, we immediately implement a targeted treatment plan. This could be a prescription, pain-relieving medication for osteoarthritis, or a further investigation plan. We can also take blood and urine samples directly on site.
Prevent
If it is a planned health check-up for an older cat (or dog), we will set up a long-term plan with special food and supplements to make aging as comfortable as possible for your animal. At an inspection, we issue the certificate required for insurance to be valid going forward.
This is how a veterinary examination goes step by step
1. Booking
You book a visit (at home, at a clinic or clinic), either for an illness or a planned check-up of your dog or cat.
2. History (Anamnes):
We sit down and talk about the animal's appetite, routines, previous illnesses and your observations.
3. Clinical examination
We feel the animal's body systematically; joints, abdomen, ears, eyes, teeth and listen to the heart.
4. Action/Sampling
If the animal is sick, we often take blood and urine samples directly on site. If it is an inspection, we issue an official certificate.
5. Planning
We create a treatment plan, write an e-prescription, or refer to our clinic for x-rays if necessary.

When is a clinic visit or emergency veterinary care required?
A home visit or a visit to our clinics is great for diagnostics, sampling and palliative care. However, if the animal is very ill or requires advanced care, an immediate clinic visit is necessary.
When a clinic or animal hospital is immediately necessary:
- Surgery and Anesthesia: If the dog or cat needs to have surgery, be neutered or have their teeth fixed under deep anesthesia, this must be performed at our equipped clinic for safety reasons.
- Imaging diagnostics: If we suspect serious heart problems, tumors in the stomach or broken bones, a clinic visit is required to perform X-rays and advanced ultrasound.
- Acute respiratory distress: If the animal is having difficulty breathing, convulsing, unconscious or has swallowed a poison, never wait for a scheduled home visit. Go to an emergency room immediately! (We do not perform emergency home visits in the middle of the night).
Symptoms that require a veterinary examination of the dog
Changes in everyday life: A healthy animal rarely shows sudden behavioral changes. If your dog stops eating his favorite food, becomes reluctant to go for walks, or you find an unknown lump, a veterinary examination is required.
How is it noticeable?: The vast majority of illnesses are discovered because the dog's routine changes. If the dog starts drinking huge amounts of water (often a sign of kidney disease, uterine inflammation or diabetes) or suddenly urinates inside, it needs to be examined.
Early signs of pain: In older dogs, pain is rarely noticed through screaming, but rather through a creeping stiffness. A dog that starts to pace, hesitates to jump up on the couch, or yawns a lot and is restless in the evenings may be suffering from ”silent” joint pain that we can quickly locate during a thorough health examination.
Examination of a cat – master of hiding pain
It is much harder to detect when a cat is sick compared to a dog. Cats are predators and hide their weaknesses to the last detail. If a cat hides under the bed, stops washing itself, gets matted fur, or starts peeing outside the litter box, these are extremely clear warning signs! Many pet owners search for ”how much does a vet visit cost for a cat” when they notice these symptoms, and that is wise, as the cat’s illnesses often deteriorate quickly. By scheduling an annual health check-up for the older cat at home, we can stop age-related diseases (such as kidney failure and thyroid problems) before they even have a chance to fully manifest.
When should I book an examination, inspection or euthanasia?
- Prevention: An annual health check (especially for animals over 8 years old) is the absolute best investment in your friend's health to find problems in time.
- In case of illness: Book us as soon as you notice persistent vomiting, unclear limping, increased thirst or listlessness.
- On sale: If you need a certificate (inspection of an adult dog) before a relocation, the certificate must, according to insurance companies and SKK, not be older than 7 days on the actual date of delivery.
- The last farewell: If the animal suffers from incurable pain and old age, we also offer a very peaceful home visit for euthanasia. Having a veterinarian euthanize your dog or cat at home in your own bed is the most beautiful last gift you can give.
Assessment: what do we do during the visit?
We make a clinical diagnosis by systematically reviewing the animal's body and vital functions.
- Clinical examination of the whole animal: We listen to the heart and palpate the stomach where the animal feels most secure in the home.
- Medical history and anamnesis: We investigate appetite, routines and symptoms to pinpoint the cause of the discomfort or concern.
- Blood and urine sampling: We take samples on site to measure organ status and rule out internal diseases or infections.
- Diagnostic imaging and referral if necessary: In the event of a suspected injury that requires an X-ray or ultrasound, we refer directly to our animal clinic in Stockholm or another referral agency.
Dog advice and treatment
Depending on what our veterinary examination shows, we immediately start targeted treatment. This may be a prescription for antibiotics (in case of confirmed infection), pain-relieving medications (NSAIDs) for osteoarthritis, or e-prescriptions for skin-care shampoos. If we discover severe tartar on your dog during the health check, which is extremely common, we will book you into our clinic for a professional tartar removal under safe and supervised anesthesia.
Treatment and follow-up of the cat
Once we have examined the cat and made a diagnosis (for example, overactive thyroid or kidney failure via blood tests), a lifelong medical treatment is often initiated. We prescribe medication and special veterinary food. A huge advantage of Vetathome is that we can then carry out all necessary return visits and follow-up blood tests safely at home on the cat's couch for the rest of its life, so that it never again needs to be forced into a transport cage for constant testing.
Expectations and security after a veterinary visit
Getting a diagnosis and a clear plan reduces anxiety. A professional examination always lays the foundation for the right treatment and a safe everyday life for your animal.
- Quick relief: Many everyday ailments, such as ear infections, are quickly stabilized with the right medication.
- Legal security: An inspection certificate is an important medical receipt that secures insurance in the event of a change of ownership.
- Peaceful ending: When the time is right, we offer an empathetic and stress-free final farewell at home in the animal's own bed.
Expectations in case of illness
The vast majority of everyday ailments, such as uncomplicated infections, ear problems, eye problems or mild joint inflammation, heal or stabilize quickly with the right medication that is started on time after a thorough examination.
The important inspection certificate
When we issue an inspection certificate, it gives you as the seller and the buyer a secure legal basis. The certificate is a medical "snapshot" of the animal's health, which is absolutely crucial for insurance to apply correctly in the event of a change of ownership, without hidden defects arising.
A dignified ending
Many who search for "veterinary euthanasia at home" or "veterinary euthanasia at home Stockholm" are carrying an enormous amount of grief. Our prognosis and promise in these cases is to offer the absolute most anxiety-free, calm and painless ending possible, surrounded by family in a safe, candlelit environment at home in the living room.
Self-check – feel your animal often
Before we arrive for our health check, you are the most important person to check your pet. Do this at home every week:
- Check eyes and nose: They should be clear, clean and without yellow or green purulent discharge.
- Feel the hole.: Gently run your hands over the animal's chest. You should be able to easily feel the ribs under a thin layer of fat. If you have to push hard into the hole, the animal is overweight; if you feel the ribs very clearly like a fence, it may be emaciated (a sign of illness).
- Lift your lips: Look at your teeth and gums. Is it red, bleeding or does it smell rotten? Then it's high time to book a senior check-up and dental care at our clinic!
Preventive routines save thousands of dollars
The best examination is the preventive one. You can actively prevent illness and expensive veterinary visits in the future:
- Annual senior check-up: An annual blood test for seniors detects hidden diseases (such as kidney failure) long before symptoms appear.
- Brush your teeth: Daily tooth brushing is the only thing that stops dangerous oral bacteria from spreading to the heart and kidneys.
- Insure on time: Take out good insurance when the animal is young to avoid expensive reservations for future illnesses.
Cost, insurance and compensation
The cost of a veterinary visit and whether it is covered by your insurance depends entirely on why we are examining your animal. We are happy to assist with smooth direct settlement with your insurance company in connection with illness.

What is the cost of a veterinary examination of a dog if the animal is healthy?
If we perform a scheduled, general health check on a healthy dog (without symptoms of illness), this falls under prophylactic care. In this case, you pay for the examination/home visit, the trip and any blood panels, which are not covered by your insurance. We often offer affordable senior packages for this.
How much does a vet visit for a cat cost (veterinary visit cat price)?
Our basic price for coming to your home and examining a sick cat is 2,150 SEK (delivery included in Stockholm). The cost is then determined by whether we need to take additional blood or urine samples to determine the disease. If you have insurance, we will help with direct payment on the spot!
Can you perform a home visit for euthanasia by a veterinarian in Stockholm?
Yes. One of our most important and appreciated services is to offer a deeply empathetic, calm and stress-free end to your pet's life at home. We provide home visits by veterinarians for euthanasia throughout Stockholm and support you throughout the difficult process.
Do you offer home visits by a veterinarian in Gothenburg, Malmö or Skåne?
There are many committed pet owners who are looking for veterinary home visits in Gothenburg, veterinary home visits in Malmö, veterinary home visits in Skåne, Halmstad, Laholm, Uppsala, Norrköping and Västerås. At Vetathome, our mobile veterinary vehicles and veterinarians currently operate exclusively in the Stockholm area and surrounding areas.
What is included in an inspection before selling a dog in Motala or Linköping?
Searches such as "dog inspection Linköping" or Motala are common before puppy deliveries. If you book us in Stockholm for an inspection, a complete clinical examination is always included (listening to the heart, feeling the joints, stomach and eyes) and the issuance of an SKK approved inspection certificate, which according to insurance companies must be a maximum of 7 days old at the time of transfer.
Do I have to have an inspection done for an adult dog?
Yes, it is extremely highly recommended! If you sell or relocate an adult dog (inspection of an adult dog), insurance companies generally always require a newly issued inspection certificate so that the new buyer can take over the life and veterinary care insurance without any gaps or new reservations in the terms and conditions.
How do I prepare my animal for you to come to my home as a veterinarian?
Try to have your dog well rested before we arrive (but please save some urine if we have asked for a urine sample!). For cats, it is very important that you lock the cat in a separate room (e.g. the bathroom) well in advance before we ring the doorbell, so that it does not have time to run and hide under a heavy sofa.
Do you perform emergency home visits as a veterinarian in Stockholm in the middle of the night?
No. We offer flexible home visits, often during both days and evenings (and accept some emergencies during our regular business hours), but we are not an overnight emergency service. If your pet becomes life-threateningly ill in the wee hours, you must go to a staffed animal hospital immediately.
