Emergency care

When your pet is critically ill or injured, it's important to get help as quickly as possible. At our clinic, we offer emergency care for animals that need quick action to prevent their condition from getting worse. Here are some things you should know about emergency care and when it's time to seek help:

What does emergency care for animals mean?

Emergency care means that we quickly care for animals that have suffered illnesses or injuries that could worsen if not treated immediately. Our clinic has competent staff, including veterinarians and animal nurses, who work to stabilize and treat animals in need of emergency care.

When should you seek emergency care?

Emergency care that should be sought immediately:

  • Severe injuries and major bleeding
  • Difficulty breathing or blocked airways
  • Sudden swollen abdomen
  • Snakebite
  • High fever and poor general condition
  • Decreased level of consciousness or unconsciousness
  • Cramps
  • Heatstroke
  • Bloody vomiting/diarrhea
  • Poisoning – even before symptoms are seen
  • Severe dehydration
  • Urinary retention, when the animal cannot urinate or only gets out a few drops
  • Gastrointestinal obstruction
  • Allergic shock
  • When your animal has eaten inappropriate objects
  • Acute eye diseases
  • Severe pain

If you experience any of these conditions, please contact us immediately. If possible, call us in advance so that we can prepare to receive you and provide the correct treatment quickly.

Some acute conditions should be treated the same day but are not directly life-threatening. You will then be given an emergency appointment at our clinic for examination by a veterinarian.

  • Anal sac inflammation with severe pain or visible swelling
  • Acute stomach illness that has not improved with bland food (puppies and small dogs should come in rather than large dogs in good general condition)
  • Severe lameness without visible injuries
  • Frequent urination where the animal can still pee (a dog with urinary retention should be brought in immediately!)
  • Minor injuries
  • Fever between 39–39.5 degrees Celsius

Please contact us if you are unsure of the urgency of the situation.

Intensive care and specialist care

If your animal needs more advanced care or intensive monitoring, we can help you by referring you to nearby animal hospitals.
