Vaccination

Vaccinating dogs and cats is a critical part of responsible pet ownership. Vaccines protect our four-legged friends from potentially dangerous and contagious diseases that can be both serious and life-threatening.

Protection against infectious diseases

‍Vaccination is an effective way to protect dogs and cats against a number of infectious diseases. These diseases can be spread through contact with other sick animals, directly or indirectly. By vaccinating your pet, you help reduce the risk of them contracting and developing serious diseases. ‍

What is basic vaccination?

‍Primary vaccination is a series of vaccines administered to young puppies and kittens to build their immunity against various infectious diseases. These vaccinations are necessary to protect the animal from serious health risks and to prevent the spread of diseases in the animal population. Common diseases vaccinated against:
  • Dogs: Parvovirus, distemper, infectious liver disease (hepatitis), kennel cough and rabies.
  • Cats: Feline distemper, feline distemper and rabies.

Vaccination schedule:

‍The basic vaccination for dogs and cats usually begins at 8 weeks of age and 12 weeks of age and is then repeated once a year. ‍

Why is it important?

‍Basic vaccination is important because it provides a strong immune system against dangerous diseases that can otherwise be life-threatening or lead to chronic health problems. It also protects other animals and people from spreading the infection. Some diseases are difficult to treat if the animal becomes infected, so preventive measures are crucial. ‍

Common vaccinations for dogs

  • Distemper: A highly contagious disease that affects the dog's respiratory tract, gastrointestinal tract, and nervous system.
  • Parvovirus: A disease that affects the dog's gastrointestinal tract and can be fatal, especially in puppies.
  • Hepatitis (HCC): A viral disease that affects the dog's liver and can lead to serious illness.
  • Parainfluenza: A common cause of kennel cough in dogs, also known as “dog flu.”
  • Leptospirosis: Leptospirosis is a potentially serious bacterial infection that can affect dogs and can be transmitted to humans.
  • Rabies: Vaccination against rabies is required when the animal is traveling outside Sweden.

Common vaccinations for cats:

  • Panleukopenia (feline distemper): A serious and fatal disease that affects the cat's blood-forming organs.
  • Feline Herpesvirus (FHV-1) and Calicivirus: Two viruses that cause upper respiratory infections in cats.
  • Rabies: Vaccination against rabies is required when the animal is traveling outside Sweden.

Vaccination interval

‍After being vaccinated, dogs and cats need regular booster vaccinations to maintain their protection. Vaccination intervals may vary depending on the animal's age, health, and the type of vaccine used. Your veterinarian will provide you with recommendations for when your pet should be revaccinated. ‍

Exceptions and adaptation

‍Vaccination is an individual process, and not all pets have the same needs. Your veterinarian can customize the vaccination schedule depending on your dog or cat's health, age, and exposure to infectious risks. Some pets may also be exempt from certain vaccines depending on their health condition.
