Vomiting & diarrhea

Vomiting and diarrhea are common problems in both dogs and cats. These symptoms can be caused by a variety of factors, including poor nutrition, infections, poisoning, or other underlying health problems. It is important to know how to manage vomiting and diarrhea in your pet to ensure their well-being.

Causes of vomiting and diarrhea in dogs and cats

  • Poor diet or allergies
  • Infections with viruses, bacteria or parasites.
  • Poisoning from ingestion of toxic substances.
  • If they swallow a foreign object that can get stuck in the gastrointestinal tract.
  • Inflammation of the pancreas.
  • Sudden changes in feed.
  • Side effects of medication.
  • Inflammatory bowel disease.
  • Stress, especially in cats.

When should you see a veterinarian:

It is important to pay attention to your pet's condition. You should contact a veterinarian if:
  • Your pet is showing signs of abdominal pain.
  • The animal is very lethargic and tired or refuses to eat.
  • The dog or cat is vomiting intensely.
  • The animal may have eaten something poisonous.
  • The animal has eaten a foreign object that may be stuck in the intestine.
  • Vomit contains blood or the stool is bloody.
  • The animal is tired and affected or has a fever.
  • Puppies/kittens and small dogs experience rapid drops in blood sugar when they do not eat and therefore need special attention.
  • Animals with underlying diseases, such as kidney and liver diseases.

How does an investigation work?

‍The veterinarian will begin by examining the animal and then discuss the diet and any blood or stool samples that can be taken on site. For further investigation, an ultrasound or X-ray is usually required. ‍To avoid problems with vomiting and diarrhea, it is important to avoid giving pets very salty, spicy or fatty leftovers. When changing food, you should gradually accustom your pet to the new diet over at least 7 days. To prevent problems, you can also provide supplements with friendly bacteria and be prepared with bland food at home. ‍When it comes to vomiting and diarrhea, early diagnosis and treatment are crucial. Our veterinarians have the experience and knowledge to determine the cause behind these stomach problems and can create an individual treatment plan.
