Chemical castration

Chemical castration in dogs is a medical procedure that temporarily inhibits the reproductive function of male dogs by injecting a small hormone implant under the skin. It is important to note that this is not the same as permanent surgical castration, which involves removing the testicles. Instead, chemical castration is a temporary solution that temporarily reduces or blocks the dog's ability to produce sex hormones, such as testosterone.

The purpose of chemical castration

The primary purpose of chemical castration is to control unwanted mating and manage certain behavioral problems that may be related to sex hormones, such as aggression or marking behavior. It is also sometimes used in conjunction with medical treatment of certain hormone-dependent diseases, such as prostate enlargement.

When can you expect results?

It can take up to eight weeks to see the full effect. In some dogs, a temporary increase in testosterone occurs after about 3-4 weeks, which is normal.

How long does the effect last?

There are currently two implants to choose from, one that works for about 6 months and one that works for about 1 year. The dog will regain its ability to reproduce and its sex hormones when the drug's effect wears off.

Pros and cons:

Chemical castration can be a useful option for owners who are not ready to undergo permanent surgical castration on their dog. It can also be used to evaluate the effects of castration before making a final decision. As with all medical procedures, there are risks and side effects with chemical castration. Side effects can include appetite changes, weight gain, and in some cases, there may be a need to adjust the dosage. In summary, chemical castration is a temporary solution to address reproductive issues in dogs. It is important to carefully consider all aspects of this procedure and consult with a veterinarian before making a decision about whether it is appropriate for your dog.‍
