There are no strict guidelines for when a health check should be performed; this is usually decided by the pet owner. Typically, it is between four and seven years for dogs and between seven and ten years for cats.
How does it work?
During a wellness check, the vet will perform a thorough clinical examination of your pet, from nose to tail. This includes assessing general condition, checking teeth, skin, eyes and ears, among other things. The vet will also listen to the heart and lungs to detect any abnormalities. Blood tests and sometimes urine tests are part of the wellness check, but this is first discussed with the pet owner. If the vet notices something that seems wrong during the wellness check, a more in-depth examination and investigation may be required. This may include ultrasounds or X-rays to get a better understanding of any problems. These additional tests are usually scheduled at a later date. It is important to note that if your pet is already showing clear signs of illness, you should schedule a regular veterinary visit instead of a routine wellness check. As your four-legged friend begins to age, it becomes even more important to consider regular senior check-ups. The age and risk of age-related diseases vary depending on the breed, size and species. Large dogs tend to age faster than smaller breeds. Senior checkups allow your veterinarian to monitor your pet's health more closely and identify any signs of aging or deficiencies at an early stage. Taking care of your senior dog or cat through regular health checkups is one way to give them the best quality of life as they age.
